Place butter, icing sugar, plain flour and vanilla essence into a food processor; pulse until mixture forms a soft ball scraping down the sides of bowl if necessary.
Roll heaped teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and place into small paper cup cake lined mini muffin pans. Brush lightly with milk and sprinkle with chopped macadamia nuts.
Bake in a preheated oven at 140°C for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Store in an airtight container.
Hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios or Brazil nuts can be used instead of the macadamia nuts.
