Cutting equipment

Knives

Knives come in all shapes, sizes and lengths. Some have a special serrated edge to cut through bread because it is so soft. Others are large to cut bigger shapes such as pumpkin or meats.  There are small knives especially designed to cut smaller pieces of vegetables into specific shapes. Remember, all knives are sharp and can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

Wash then thoroughly dry knives and store out of reach of young children..

Chopping boards

Chopping boards are made of different materials from wood to plastic to special glass. Probably most popular are the plastic ones. Various colours are available now and the idea is you have a different colour for different types of foods. Boards used for raw meat, fish and chicken should not be used for other foods.

Scissors

Scissors can be used to cut paper to line cake tins, while some scissors are heavy duty (see the white ones in the photo) to cut things like chicken into pieces and they are called Poultry Shears.

Can openers

Can openers come in various shapes and sizes. Used for removing lids from steel cans. However, some cans come with their own “ring pull” for opening.

Potato peelers

Potato peelers are available in various shapes with some being specially designed to prevent strain injuries to wrists.

Graters

Graters are used to grate lots of different types of foods like cheese, ginger, whole nutmegs, vegetables and fruits. Things can be grated fine, coarse, flakes and shards. Just remember graters do have an “ouch” factor if you get to close, so mind your fingers!
