Water chestnuts

Water chestnuts look very similar to English chestnuts hence the name they are given although they are actually a corm that is usually grown in water. They have a crisp texture that remains crisp even after cooking and a nutty sweet flavour and are a wonderful addition to Asian dishes. They can be found in Asian grocers fresh but are more readily available in cans at supermarkets in the canned vegetable area. Add them whole, sliced or chopped to your cooking for a distinctive crisp texture.
