Lifting and turning utensils

Tongs

Tongs come with long and short handles and are used for picking up or turning foods over. If you are deep frying (cooking in a big saucepan of oil like chips) or barbequing, the long handles will keep you further away and protected from being burnt. The short handled ones are used for serving up foods.

Egg lifters

Egg lifters or flippers are used to do just that, flip foods over when you are cooking them. They are wide and sturdy for lifting or turning pieces of chicken or fish.

Spatulas

Spatulas are really handy as they bend easily and can be wiggled around to gently lift things like cookies off a tray. Some are a bit wider and can be used to lift fish and chicken, but best of all, because spatulas are wide and flat, they make great spreaders for anything from icing to melted chocolate.

Kitchen spoons

Kitchen spoons are used to mix and serve. The perforated spoons are great for lifting things out of water or oil because the liquid drains through the holes.

Spaghetti spoons

Spaghetti gives a whole new meaning to “slippery” and a spaghetti spoon with its spiky bits is just right for catching the spaghetti as you scoop it up. Try doing it with an ordinary spoon!

Soup ladles

Soup ladles, because of their shape, scoop up soup and they have a little pouring “lip” on the side to make it easy to pour the soup into bowls.
