Thyme

Thyme is a very aromatic herb with slender densely branched stems with tiny delicate pointed leaves. The common garden thyme is the species most used in culinary applications. The dried form of thyme is much stronger especially the ground varieties so always use less than you would for fresh.

Thyme sprigs can be added to soups, casseroles and stews where the leaves fall off the stem during cooking and the woody stem can be removed before serving or the leaves can be stripped off along the stem.

  • Thyme is a traditional herb added to stuffing's and meat loaves.
  • Fresh or dried thyme is used fresh or dried as flavouring in jellies and vinegars.
  • Aromatic thyme compliments the more delicate flavours of chicken and vegetables.
  • Add one or two sprigs when marinating olives and vegetables.
  • Thyme is used in Creole and Cajun cuisine.
  • Add thyme to hearty soups such as vegetables, meat, lentils or beans.
  • Thyme leaves can be added to breads mixtures, savoury muffins and pizza dough.

Store thyme in a jug of water covered with a food storage bag in the refrigerator and will keep for 2-3 days.
